New Canadian Music II:Elliott Brood

Nominees for the Polaris music prize are generally a pretty good barometer for the health or otherwise of the Canadian music scene. Recent winners include the likes of Caribou (2008), Patrick Watson (2007 - beating the likes of Arcade Fire, Feist, The Besnard Lakes and Chad VanGaalen to the prize) and Final Fantasy (2006) give an indication of not only the strength but the diversity of the scene over here.
This year's nominees include some old reliables and some fresh talent, not least of which is Elliott Brood. As is the case with many Canadian bands who eventually make a breakthrough this side of the ocean, they're no overnight success story. Their Polaris nomination comes on the back of their sophomore album 'Mountain Meadows' but the trio have been together since 2002. Worth checking out.
